Persistent bloating is one of the most common digestive complaints, and one of the most dismissed. People are told to eat more fibre, or less fibre, or try probiotics, or cut gluten — usually without anyone identifying what's actually driving it.

What bloating is actually telling you
Bloating is not a condition. It's a symptom — one that shows up in response to several very different underlying patterns. The reason generic advice rarely fixes it is that "eat more slowly" or "take a probiotic" doesn't address what's actually producing the gas, pressure, or distension you're feeling.

Bloating within 30 minutes of eating

Bloating that builds through the day
For many people, bloating isn't tied to a single meal. It accumulates — flat in the morning, progressively worse by evening. This pattern often points to what's happening in the large intestine.
The microbiome ferments undigested material as it passes through. When that fermentation is excessive or imbalanced, gas accumulates over the course of the day. Highly fermentable carbohydrates found in garlic, onions, legumes, and certain fruits and grains tend to be the most common triggers.

Food sensitivity reactions — which are different from allergies and don't show up on standard allergy panels — can also produce significant digestive symptoms through an immune-mediated mechanism.
Identifying specific triggers requires more than an elimination trial. It requires understanding the mechanism so the right investigation gets done.
When bloating is more than a digestive issue
The gut doesn't operate in isolation. Stress directly affects digestive motility and gut sensitivity through the gut-brain axis — the bidirectional communication between the nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. Chronic stress slows digestion, increases gut permeability, and alters the microbiome. People under sustained stress often find their digestive symptoms are significantly worse, even without any dietary changes.
Thyroid function is another factor that's frequently overlooked. Hypothyroidism slows gastrointestinal motility throughout the digestive tract, contributing to bloating, constipation, and a general sense of sluggishness after eating.
Sex hormones matter too, particularly for women. Bloating that reliably worsens in the week before a period is often hormonally driven rather than primarily a gut issue.
